When I bought a dual-band router a year ago, the wifi card didn't scream 'I can do 5 GHz. The Dell wifi-software in this Inspiron laptop was NOT stable, slowing down and dropping connections continually. The Dell wifi-software lead me on an education about troubleshooting wireless connections until I figured out that it's best to un-install the Dell wifi-software. After that, the laptop was left with the 'generic' Intel wifi-software, which works just fine, perfectly stable, and I don't recall ever having a problem with 'lost functionality' after reverting to it.
