Only a few times in history has a musician been singled out as the world-class master of his instrument. Cobham is one of those few artists. For over 30 years, he has received international acclaim as the total consummate percussionist. The legendary Cobham, with his matchless, dazzling, ambidextrous skills as a drummer, has applied the same insistent fervor to his long list of monumental achievements. He is one of the few Percussionists, specializing in the Jazz drum set to lead his own band.
The award winning Cobham has custom designed trend setting acoustic and electronic drum sets and has endorsed products that he created and refined. The album title track Total Eclipse has a slower tempo music unlike the first two but it still maintain great nuances created from the first two tracks.
The only difference is the more exploration of piano but still maintaining great brass section augmented beautifully with drumwork. When I say "great" brass section I mean it's excellently played and it produces really great sound especially if you use a decent stereo set.
I do enjoy it very much. Other tracks that are of interest are Moon Germs which reminds me back to the first two tracks of this album - really worth listening; and also Sea Of Tranquility - another wonderfully crafted long track started with ambient piano work and it moves excellently in crescendo , blending all brass section and its solo and again The concluding track Last Frontier demonstrates Cobham's great drum solo.
I can not say this album other than excellent as the music is wonderfully crafted and Cobham's distinctive drumming demonstrated clearly throughout the album. Keep on proggin'! Flirting with congas and steel drums at the early age of five, Billy started his musical career. He played his first gig with his dad when he was just eight, in New York, 5 years after moving from Panama in Beyond already having a superb musical ear and dynamic technique, he refined his musical education in the New York's High School of Music and Art, in which he learnt more drumming techniques and music theory.
He graduated in and began playing in the United States Army Band from to He recorded five albums with Miles, including "Bitches Brew" in which he was uncredited. The album had a similar style to "Spectrum", and not as funky as "Total Eclipse", which was released the same year with the same line-up as William Emanuel Cobham Jr.
